Luckey Climbers

Max Vanatta

Luckey Climbers is a play structure design firm which focuses on non-traditional playgrounds.  They do not feature slides, swings, or merry-go-rounds which usually account for the majority of traffic at more playgrounds.  They instead have highly complex and individual forms which allow users to build their own adventure.

These structures are roughly composed of three elements:

1: The metal super-structure which supports the entire play structure.  This could be roughly estimated to be the wooden grid in our own project.

2: The netting and tension elements which provide support and stability to the platforms which users climb upon, sit upon, and explore.  These nets not only provide support and direction, but safety as well by bounding the play region.  These structures can be up to a few stories tall and therefore these nets are very important in this safety aspect.

3: The platforms which the users crawl, climb, and sit upon.  These are sometimes plywood and sometimes plastic, but what is important is that they are surfaced a certain way to provide safe playing, but also not too safe as to take all fun and adventure away.

Musical Fence

Max Vanatta

The Musical Fence by Paul Matisse is an outdoor installation which is meant to be touched, played with and bring people together.  It was a two part installation initially at the Cambridge City Hall and later divided in two, with one piece moving to the Montshire Museum and the other other to the deCordova Museum.  Matisse is known for his ability to combine science at its core levels to observable and often engaging phenomena.

It was disassembled due to a large number of noise complaints, so take this as a lesson that with great opportunity to make great music comes the great risk of making the bad...

SHIN Architects: Indoor Playground

Max Vanatta

This playground is located in Seoul, South Korea and is designed by SHIN Architects.

The playground inhabits an entire building and integrated a large variety of semi-traditional to non-traditional playground elements including - climbing wall/ramp, Ball pit, slide-like structures, and the iconic netting.  This variety of equipment and freedom of play allows the users to have not only a fun time testing their boundaries as most play grounds, but also letting their minds run free with how to use this massive space.
